Sitting in the hillside of Burbank with engaging views of the valley, this housing project was a redevelopment for an existing one story house. Post adding another floor to the existing building, we designed the roofs to challenge the existing hip roofs extending their gables to resist natural form and attaining a balance while achieving its respective forms. The city of Burbank has a strict Hillside development plan which we managed to fulfill in a period of a year by presenting various drawings such as the plans following necessary setbacks, various sections showing the height limitations according to the zoning code, the renderings to meet the Planning department neighborhood design conditions but at the same time push the design standards to achieve a better and contemporary elevation for the client while maintaining the traditional impression of the neighborhood. It was quite challenging to work with the Burbank planning department to reach an agreement on the design which benefited both the clients and the City. The project is now at the stage of producing construction documents and obtaining a Permit.
